Day 1286

I wasn't really looking at the clock today.  I think we got up about 8:30.  Then it was pet stuff - neither of us wanted breakfast.  Lucy has the runs again, so she got some of the canned food.  After that we put the dog in the car and went to the badlands.

It was 50 miles back to the badlands turnoff.  Then it was another 8 to the park.  The trip was worth it.  It was nice that I could go 73 mph.  The limit is 80, but I didn't want to go that fast.  We got a little over 17 mpg for the trip.

The badlands are basically 25 miles of eroded cliff.  It's sort of like Bryce, but there's no colors or Hoodoos.  It's spectacular though.  There's a 24 mile road that winds through it all.  The roads have plenty of turnouts and lookouts.  We stopped at many turnouts and all of the lookouts.  We even took a short hike at one.

Unfortunately the government doesn't like dogs, so Lucy had to stay in the truck.

There's a lodge with a restaurant and gift shop near the far end of the park.  We stopped and ate there.  It was good.  I also bought a buffalo wallet and this cool multi-tool pen.  The parks visitor center is next door.  It had some really neat exhibits explaining the geology of the place as well as the ancient animals that lived there.  Apparently the badlands are really rich in fossils.

I took well over 100 pictures.  We were there until 3.

The park road returns to I90 about 20 miles from the entrance.  When we got back to Rapid City we stopped at a Petco to get Lucy more canned food.  Then we went home.  Ellen's asshole was giving her trouble again.

Dinner was the last of the Rudy's BBQ in a sandwich.  After dinner was surfing and TV.
