Day 864

I woke up at 7:30, but didn't get up until 8:30.  Then it was pet stuff and breakfast followed by a little surfing.  After Ellen had eaten we went to ACE to get the two screws I needed for the bathroom door.  I also got a router bit for the Dremel (2 for $12!!!).

When we got home I attached the second handle to the door.  The screws fit perfectly.  Then I moved the door and the tools I needed to the house.  I drafted Ellen to help me put up the door rail.  That took quite awhile because I wanted to make sure I got it perfect.  Things went well.  All of the screw holes I marked were studs.  The result was an almost perfectly mounted rail at exactly the lright height.

Things went a little wrong when I hung the door.  I should have made the door an inch wider, but I thought that it wouldn't work.  It turns out that another inch would fit, but no more.  Because the door is only as wide as the opening It doesn't cover the opening completely.  That's because the opening isn't square.  Also, the floor mounted door guide cant't engage the door when it's closed.

It was 12:30 when I discovered these things, so I stopped for lunch.  After lunch it was back to work.

I couldn't fix the non-square door opening.  I did what I could by mounting the door guide as close to the edge of the opening as I could.  That involved cutting a 2 inch slot in the baseboard to mount the guide.  That's where the router bit came in.  I don't think I could have done it without it.  I'll take the second bit to Oregon.

When I was finished with the baseboard I went out to the garage and found a scrap piece of aluminum.  I cut it to length, rounded the corners, and drilled and countersunk mounting holes in it.  Then I took it to the house and mounted it to the bottom of the door.  That will allow the door to engage the door guide when the door is closed.

When I was finished with that Ellen painted the baseboard and the aluminum.  The aluminum will take another coat.  That means that I'll finish up mounting the door guide and hanging the door tomorrow.

Ellen fixed Mongolian beef for dinner.  After dinner was reading and TV.
