We got up at 7, packed up the trailer, and were on the road by 7:50. The drive to Kanab went well. The road was good, there was little traffic, and we got amazing mileage. 11.8 MPG is great considering all of the up and down we did.
We fueled up at Kanab and continued to Page. Again the road was good, we got good mileage, and there wasn't much in traffic problems except for one big one. We were rounding a wide curve and I wasn't watching the road. I was looking at some buildings on the side of the road. We were almost hit head on by a car passing a RV in the opposite lane. The only reason we weren't was the RV hit his brakes and drove on the shoulder. I didn't see the car until it was almost in front of us. We got very lucky.
We fueled up in Page, but didn't really have to. From there on out there was a significant number of cars. We got held up several times and had to deal with a couple of people who didn't want to let us back in when a passing lane ended. The 20 mile section of bad road in the middle is still there.
When we got to Flagstaff it seemed everyone was filling up their vehicle. The first place we stopped was jammed. The second was out of gas. We finally got fuel at the third place, but it was 40 cents more than it should have been. As we drove through town every gas station we passed was packed. This was about noon there time on a Sunday.
When we got to the park there was only one place available - a back in. To make it worse it was a difficult back in. It was also very tight. I managed to do it with a lot of help from an understanding campground host. When we finally got it in there was only 2 inches of clearance on the off door side. We had to pull the trailer forward to clear an obstacle on the door side. It's tight.
There's no wifi or TV and the Verizon signal isn't strong, but it's an OK place.
After setting up and feeding the pets we went to the grocery store. After that we went over to the site of an old fort. It wan't anything special. On the way back we noticed that the southbound lanes of I17 were backed up for as far as we could see from the overpass. Ellen looked it up. There was a wreck south of town. The backup was at least 9 miles long. I'm sure glad we got in before it. All in all we were really lucky today.
Dinner was frozen pizza. Then it was surfing.
